To further diagnose a low compression situation have the mechanic do a wet and dry compression comparison. #1 dry is a normal compression check. #2 wet is a compression check with about an ounce of motor oil poured in the bad cylinder. I didn't have a leak down gauge at the time so I just did a quick and dirty "leak down" test by blowing air in the cylinder (at TDC) and listening for a leak. Sounded like a had a good size leak from the exhaust valve so I pulled the engine thinking I had some valve troubles.

Also check the piston's rear cap, where it catches the trigger sear (check that also), for damage as your #2 sounds like.
