WebFeb 4, 2013 · The dished pistons and flat top pistons are for 2 different compression ratio's, older engines use dished pistons, newer engines use flattops, (something like 8.8:1 compared to 9.3:1). Beyond the engine, you need to check lots of things to make sure the old 2 piece rear main seal engine will bolt up to where a newer 1 piece rear main seal ...

The reason dished are use on power adders is because there's less cylinder pressure pushing against the adj. parts like the heads, gaskets, pistons. It's just safer this way and provides an ease of the mind. WebAug 29, 2011 · Go with flat-tops, they'll produce a 9.0:1 static compression ratio and that will be a perfect match for the cam you linked. Make sure to use a piston with a …

Sometimes a dome is necessary to get the compresson up (like a bunch on a chevy ). Compression is free horsepower, but everything has it limits.
WebSep 19, 2008 · Dome VS Flat Top. Given all being equal how much is a flat top piston worth, as far as hp, over a domed piston. (If any at all?) ie. = 14:1 to with a flat top and a 50cc chamber on a sbc or 14:1 with a dome and a 64cc chamber. Sorry if this has been beat to death but I screwed around in search and couldn't find squat. WebOct 2, 2015 · Added to this is the thickness of the head gasket which at a minimum is .015 inch, the middle is about .028 inch, and the maximum is .053 inch. The gasket alone with a flat top piston having 7 ccs in valve clearance notches would range at 9.9 for the thin gasket; 9.6 for the medium; 9.1 for the thick gasket.
